Violin & Viola Lessons

Dr. Walfish teaches violin, viola, and chamber music to students from young beginners through conservatory-bound musicians, in person in South Florida. Every studio relationship starts with a clear picture of the student’s goals, current level, and practice habits, so lessons stay purposeful from the first week.

Lessons by Level

Beginner Violin

Careful early technique, steady rhythm, and a genuine love of playing, built through a structured, age-appropriate approach for students beginning around age five and up.

Beginner Viola

Viola is taught as its own instrument from day one, not a violin substitute. Beginners benefit from Dr. Walfish’s background as a professional violist, including proper clef reading, alto-clef literacy, and idiomatic left-hand setup.

Intermediate Students

Repertoire and technique that build real independence: shifting, vibrato, tone production, and the sight-reading and listening skills that let a student practice effectively between lessons.

Advanced Students

Demanding repertoire, refined technique, and the interpretive tools of a working chamber musician, for students preparing for competitions, festivals, or serious solo and ensemble performance.

Conservatory & Audition Preparation

Repertoire selection, technical refinement, and mock-audition experience for students preparing college and conservatory auditions, drawing on Dr. Walfish’s own conservatory training and his students’ admissions to Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Indiana University, and other leading programs.

Adult Students

Adult beginners and adult returners are welcome and taught with the same seriousness as any other student, with lesson pacing built around real adult schedules and goals.

Chamber Music Coaching

Coaching for duos, trios, and quartets from a working chamber musician, covering ensemble listening, balance, rehearsal technique, and interpretive decision-making.

Viola-Specific Study

For viola students who want a teacher who is a violist first: idiomatic technique, repertoire suited to the instrument, and mentorship from someone who has built a performing career on viola.

In-person lessons in South Florida are recommended for young beginners, since hands-on setup and posture guidance are hard to replace remotely. For intermediate through college-level students, Zoom lessons are available and can work well once fundamentals are established.
